Academic Advising History

Academic Advising has been a part of the College since it first opened its doors in 1948.  At that time, Counseling Services was the area of the College which performed functions akin to that of Academic Advising in present day. Counseling Services in the early years of the College was much like a high school guidance counseling office.  Early general catalogs for the College show that the services offered in 1948 consisted of assisting “students in the selection of occupational objectives and in the solution of personal problems that may have bearing upon their school work.”  Beginning as a small office with few employees to serve students, this function of the College has grown greatly over the years in size and services.

By the early 1960s Counseling Services was placed under the direction of the Dean of Students.  Though the scope of Counseling Services was beginning to expand, its core functions remained helping students selecting appropriate courses and assisting students with personal problems that could interfere with their school work. By 1964, Counseling Services also administered aptitude tests as well as interest and personality tests, in addition to their other services.  In 1970 the focus of Counseling Services again shifted as new services were added. This newly envisioned Counseling Services consisted of guidance counselors assisted with admission, class selection, emotional problems, job placement, scholarships, and financial problems.

Services changed again in 1984 when the College changed the name from “Counseling Services” to “Academic Advising.”  Faculty, administrators, and academic advisors continued to advise students in course planning.  Financial services, assessments, and job placement were moved to other offices.  Emotional problems were no longer a part of the services of this area either, as the focus was deftly shifted to focusing on academic issues.  In 1985 students were instructed to attend a new student orientation, later titled “First Step,” presented by the Academic Advising Department.  Faculty members continued to advise students within their majors.  The department also began to offer advising for students performing below College Standards, or “Scholastic Standards Advising.”

By 1990, Academic Advising provided advisors specialized to specific majors as well as career counseling.  This also introduced the Career Information Center.  In 1993 Academic Advising services were expanded with the addition of advisors at two campus locations in addition to the Taylorsville-Redwood campus. 1994 began the start of services for transfer students.  A full time advisor assisted students planning to transfer to four year institutions. By 1998 services in the career information center began to expand.  Academic advisors were then available at four campuses; Redwood, South, Sandy, and Millcreek.

Today services have continued to expand.  This department is keeping up with the times, technology, and the needs of SLCC students.  Some of their current services can be found at the top of this page or at their homepage:
