Chef Menus

Events and Holidays

Menus created for special events such as dinners or banquets honoring notable individuals or organizations demonstrate the significant role that food plays in various types of celebrations. Distinctive logos of societies, charitable organizations, and sponsors often have prominent placement in the design of these menus. Fine dining menus – whether it be on an airline, a cruise ship, or in a restaurant – illustrate a distinctive aspect of our culinary heritage.

Multi-Lingual Menus

Not all of the menus in our collection are printed in English.  Some of the menus are featured in other languages and some in multiple languages.  These languages include French, German, Chinese, and Italian.  The multi-lingual menus provide guests an authentic cultural dining experience.  Dishes may be presented in their true cultural form.  This allows the diner to experience the joy of cultural foods without having to leave the country.

Variety: The Spice of Design

There are a wide range of designs in the Culinary Arts Chef Menus Archives. Some menus are plain single-sided sheets of paper or hotel letterhead with the menu of the day printed or typed. Other menus feature various courses printed in an elegant font with engravings of beautiful ladies, flowers, or landscapes. Themed menus may employ brightly colored printed images or old-fashioned iconic imagery. More contemporary menus utilize specialized fonts and visual layout to catch the eye of the diner.

The Culinary Arts Program Archives contains materials which have been gathered over the years to provide contemporary and historical examples of Menus and other materials used on a daily basis in restaurants.

Representing selections from elegant gourmet events to those unique and delicious “hole-in-the-wall” cafes, the Menus displayed in this online exhibit are amongst those that are utilized along with others from the Archives in the Culinary Arts Program to augment students’ experiences at Salt Lake Community College.
